SushiMomma

Hey kids,

I don't know why the above picture cracks me the hell up.

So, Momma tried her hand at some sushi-makin' at lunch time today. I got a box full of supplies last week from asiangrocer.com, because I was hard-pressed to find a sushi-rolling mat, nori or sushi rice within a day's drive of Gardnerville.

We started with the rice, and with Wavy's help, I think it turned out pretty swell. Just the right amount of chewy and sticky, without being TOO chewy and sticky.

We made Philadelphia rolls, which are rolls with cream cheese, smoked salmon and -- instead of the usual cucumber -- I used avocado. Next time, I will definitely seek out a better smoked salmon. The one I used was tough and dry, something better suited for backpacking or space travel than sushi rolls.

All in all, not a bad first attempt. Had a hard time getting the fillings to stay in the middle of the rice; I think this will get better over time and with a few more practice runs with the sushi rolling mat. I definitely need to get my knives sharpened, the one I used ripped and shredded the nori, making for a few unsightly ragged edges.

I admit it. I'm procrastinating. I'm supposed to be writing something else for work right now, but am here instead. Ahhhh... back to it. Love you both.
