Random news and notes (a snooze-inducer)

Hey kids,

Then end of a homey, cozy weekend. Your momma and daddy stayed home, no one argued, I made another soup. If every weekend was as uneventfully pleasant as this one, I guess I'd have no complaints.

We went to the Carson Valley Days carnival today and I had one of my two Indian tacos for the year. I usually have two a year, one at C.V. Days, and another at the Genoa Candy Dance arts and crafts fest in September. Deep-fried Indian fry bread, topped with taco stuff. Best followed up by deep-fried Indian fry bread smeared with honey or sprinkled with powdered sugar. The vendors usually mistake me for one of their own, sometimes slipping me a discount, or asking me what tribe I am with. We also all gorged on sugar in the form of fresh-squeezed lemonades, frozen lemonades, sodas and cotton candy. God help us if there had been funnel cakes.

There were Help Wanted signs everywhere, soliciting help with the tear-down of the carnival, "traveling help" preferred. A chance to run away with the circus, in other words. I entertained the thought for a bit. I told daddy that I would have to start smoking again, for sure. Ever see a carny who didn't smoke?

Television: The Sopranos ended tonight. I thought the end scenes were brilliant, but only because I am a fair-weather viewer, and have not invested years of my life faithfully watching the show. If I had, I'd be pissed. Big Love returns tomorrow night. I still have the last four eps of ER on Tivo that I plan to dole out to myself over the summer. I wish I knew how to quit TV. I really do.

Slingbaby I used the sling with Jake less than half a dozen times. He usually screamed his head off while in it, and I was never entirely comfortable wearing it. But now that I've recently unearthed it again, Wavy and I are getting much use out of it. I take her shopping in it, we go to the park, we took her to the carnival in it today. Wherever Wavy and I go with it, I feel like a baby-sling ambassador. People stop us and tell us how they've never seen such a thing, how comfy-looking it is, how clever it is. In the parking lot at the store today, a lady practically ran us down with her van, rolled down the window and told us it was the "awesomest thing she had ever seen." Wow. Doesn't get out much, I'm guessing. The attention kind of makes me self-conscious and freaked-out. Whereas at first, I felt mostly hippy-ish and crunchy, I now feel like a mobile advocate for baby-wearing. Dr. Sears should be kickin' down some change.

It's Jake's last week of school. He starts back in August, so now we have to keep him entertained and away from the XBox for the entire summer. A daunting thought.

He has a potluck party on Wednesday, and I plan on making little sandwiches cut into cute shapes with cookie cutters. I'll post a pic of them if they turn out, if not, I'll forget that I even brought it up.

I ordered new glasses and they should be here sometime next week. The ones that I'm wearing are so worn out that the coating is flaking off of the lenses, and Jake has twisted and bent the frames beyond recognition. I was sweating the eye exam, as I have had some awful eye problems in the past that I treat with a lazy, on again-off again manner. But instead of the eye doctor telling me that I am half-blind and have just not noticed it yet, or that I have glaucoma or pre-glaucoma, I got a clean bill of health, and I my eyesight has actually IMPROVED one to one-and-a-half points since my last exam. The worrisome headaches that I have gotten behind my eyeballs recently are due to my current prescription being TOO strong. That actually kind of blew me away.

All right. Enough pointless rambling. Love you guys. Sleep tight.

PS: The chat icon above really, really looks like me. I got it here: www.weeworld.com
